In today's Internet-dependent world, having a basic familiarity with the languages that build the web is an important part of a well-rounded education. Even if a student doesn't plan to become a web designer or programmer, having the ability to maintain a personal or company website is a significant advantage. Web Design I will give students the knowledge and skills needed to create and administer basic web pages, whether as a hobby or as a stepping stone to an eventual career.
As an additional benefit, Web Design I continues the Living the Answer tradition of education that focuses on understanding and reasoning, not merely the memorization of information. Unlike many courses which simply teach the student how to perform specific tasks without really grasping the significance of what they are doing, Web Design I will help students to understand the underlying logic and structure of what they are learning. When taught properly, web design fosters creativity, logic, and critical thinking, providing a valuable addition to any high school education.

The class is entirely online, making it accessible from anywhere in the United States. Students will use Beginning HTML, XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript as their text and reference resource, though they will not read the whole book. Reading will actually be fairly limited because the key to learning web design is application. The assigned readings will explain whatever aspect of web design the class is studying that week, then a quiz will reinforce important concepts, followed by an assignment that applies what has been learned. Students will also watch a weekly online instructional video to suppliment their reading, and the teacher will be available by email to promptly discuss any questions. The schedule of the class is flexible, allowing students to do each week's work at whatever time is most convenient for them.
The class will last for 16 weeks. It is intended for ages 14-18. Grades will be based on quizzes, assignments, and class participation. A high speed Internet connection is required for this class.
Tuition is $149. Payment by check is due at the time of registration. If you need to withdraw subsequently, your payment is refundable, minus a $20 administrative fee, until 10 days after the first day of class.
